Massey Ferguson tractors
Tractors were first manufactured under the name Massey Ferguson in 1958. The companies, which merged into the Massey Ferguson Company in 1953, had already been producing very successful tractors of their own under different names before the fusion. It was made up of Harry Ferguson Limited and Massey-Harris Company Limited. Harry Ferguson is the inventor of the three-point hydraulic and a specialist in the field of tractors.Initially he worked with the car manufacturer Henry Ford even after Ford's withdrawal from the tractor industry.Ferguson was responsible for tractor product development, but had no written contract with Ford. Therefore, Henry Ford bore the risk but benefited from the three-point-duplex-suspension and other technical innovations that Ferguson developed. Since there was no written union for the cooperation, the companies Ford and Ferguson separated after the death of Henry Ford. Harry Ferguson started producinghis own tractors in Coventry in England. After the fusion and the change of the company name to Massey Ferguson Company, Massey Ferguson Tractors left the assembly line of the production facility in England.
Did you know that Harry Ferguson refused to use diesel engines in Massey Ferguson tractors for many years? Hard to imagine today but at that time he was of the opinion that diesel engines were too loud for his tractors and had not been perfected enough. Yet, as the engines became more and more powerful and economic, even Ferguson could not escape from the clear advantages and from 1951, he built in diesel engines in Massey Ferguson Tractors. From 1956, all Massey Ferguson Tractors bore the mark 'MF'; two years later, the company logo, which is well-known today in a slightly modified form with its three triangles, was used on Massey Ferguson Tractors. In addition, attention was increasingly paid to the development of bigger tractors, which at this point were becoming more and more in fashion and determined tractor demand.
Manufacturing in Coventry ended on 24th December 2002. That was the day when the last Massey Ferguson Tractor left the assembly line of the factory in Coventry. It was not until July 2012 that the Massey Ferguson commercial tower at the manufacturing location was finally pulled down. The 16-storey building had been erected in 1966. Before production stopped, around 3.3 million Massey Ferguson Tractors had been produced there from the year 1946.This included the model range MF 4200, which was replaced with the Massey Ferguson Tractor 4300 from October 2001. The changes to this model range included a better interior for the Massey Ferguson Tractor, as well as an environmentally-friendly Perkins- diesel engine. After the closure of the factory in Coventry, the Massey Ferguson 4300 Tractor was produced in France up until it was replaced by the MF 5400 model range in the year 2003.
Currently, 13 different model ranges of Massey Ferguson Tractors are available. The horsepower output of the smallest model, the compact tractor 1500, is 19.5 hp. In Massey Ferguson's medium- and luxury-class segments, the manufacturer also offers tractors with up to 400 hp. Thus, for every agricultural business and use there is an appropriate Massey Ferguson Tractor. The biggest model at the moment is incidentally the MF 8700: a Massey Ferguson Tractor with 8.4 l cubic capacity, a rear lifting capacity of 12 t and state-of-the-art panorama cabin.
The Dutch woman, Manon Ossevoort, went on an unbelievable journey in a Massey Ferguson tractor and reached the most southern point of the earth in December 2014. Thereby the former actress fulfilled her life-long dream and accomplished the journey from her home country, across Africa and to the Russian polar research station within 17 days.So that the Massey Ferguson Tractor's tyres did not freeze, the tractor had to stay in constant motion. The Massey Ferguson tractor travelled at an average speed of 10 km / h and overcame some difficulties such as Antarctica's the many mountains and crevices. A team of seven people were on board with Manon Ossevoort and her 'Antarctica 2' Massey Ferguson Tractor and made this legendary journey possible.
